Today I went to TFIOS Live!

julietthehuman:

When I met Hank, our conversation went like this:

Me: *hands over my copy of Pride and Prejudice* Hi! I’m a huge fan of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

Hank: *signs book* I can see that!

Me: It’s amazing. It actually makes me look forward to Mondays.

Hank: That’s great - hopefully you’ll like what we do afterwards as well…

I’m still not 100% sure what to make of this but…I think that maybe they’re planning something else after The Lizzie Bennet Diaries are over?!

Part 2 of my long ass post. Lets talk about derivation!

There is a difference between adaptive & derivative works. Time & time again the writers and actors have said LBD is not a strict adaptation. I saw someone say that they “despise” works like Pride & Prejudice & Zombies because some people feel like they need to improve the story. And that hatred is cool! Hate what you hate man! But if you hate derivative works, then you might have trouble with LBD. Don’t expect it to be just like the novel. Right off the bat the writers & creators of the show specified that they were looking at P&P from a different angle. That’s how the show is set up.
Lets look at BBC Sherlock. Now, as someone who grew up reading the accounts and watching Jeremy Bret play Sherlock Holmes, I didn’t want to watch Sherlock. Hell, I was pissed. I ranted about how basically everyone is trying to cash in on Sherlock Holmes because he’s cool again (still pissed about this, not the point) so I really didn’t want to watch it. But my grandfather talked me into it, and I saw the last half of The Great Game with him. I went into it expecting them to butcher my beloved detective, but they didn’t. And then we got to Moriarty. In canon, Moriarty is a stuffy professor. His character has been overdone. In Sherlock, Jim Moriarty is a twisted loose psychopath. And I love that! It’s such a brilliant change! Irene Adler, I have mixed feelings about. But god damn do I love what they did to Moriarty. He fits the world they set up.
Canon Lydia Bennet has no depth. LBD took a character that really didn’t have a lot of set up and made her sympathetic. She fits the LBD world. People don’t act like canon Lydia. LBD Lydia feels real. And as a derivative work, LBD can make that change.
You can be a purist (Sherlockian purist & proud, woo!) and still enjoy derivative work. But if you don’t like it, don’t watch.
Sorry if I pissed you off. I don’t expect to change anyone’s view, I just want to make a point.
